Electronic translation devices have been making headway, but they can’t provide a simple way to communicate when time is of the essence. MeNoSpeak Language Companions offer a low-tech solution for travelers facing a language barrier, providing easy to read translations for common situations.
Each MeNoSpeak is a small, passport-size book that has clean illustrations and phrases about transportation, food, money, bathrooms and more. Its authors designed the product after a stressed night at a Chinese hotel. Unable to order food or buy train tickets, they drew pictures on flashcards and ended up using them for the rest of the trip.
The company now offers books for Japanese, Chinese, French, Italian, Spanish, Korean and Turkish speakers. The books also provide information on phonetics, encouraging readers to learn the local dialect and spelling out the pronunciation.
