A visit to a local pub is an absolute no-brainer when passing through Ireland, and making your way outside of the capital city of Dublin will expose you to further authenticity and characteristic Irish hospitality. One particular watering hole that warrants a visit is Galway’s The Dáil Bar. Located on a corner just off of the Latin Quarter’s main thoroughfare, the two-story red building brings a bit of flash and glamor to the traditional Irish pub experience.
Saddle up to the bar and marvel in the wall of whiskeys that sit on display in a warm glow of lights. As part of the Galway Whiskey Trail, the bar offers tastings of some of the region’s best and homegrown, like Galway Bay.
If hunger strikes after one too many pints of Guinness, take advantage of the pub’s plentiful food menu, featuring ingredients solely from local suppliers. While mostly composed of Irish favorites like beef strew and Galway Hooker–battered fish and chips (fried using the local beer), the menu also includes international influences like Cajun chicken penne, and sweet potato and chickpea Thai red curry.
Every night of the week the bar hosts some form of live entertainment, from deejays to live bands to solo acts with acoustic guitars. The Dáil Bar also airs the country’s biggest sporting events, including all matches of the city’s home teams, Connacht Rugby and Galway United. Stop in for a pint, a shot of whiskey and a whole lot of craic!
