Destination

Budapest is a city rich in history and storied culture. While this sets the stage for an amazing travel experience, it also provides difficulties for foreigners who visit.

Bathhouses

A common nickname for this Hungarian capital is “Spa City,” because of its many bathhouses like the famous Széchenyi Thermal Bath and Swimming Pool and Gellert Baths and Spa. Visitors should keep in mind that some spas and bathhouses have separate visiting hours for men and women. Additionally, most baths require patrons to bring their own gear, like sandals and towels. If you leave in a certain amount of time, you may be able to get a complimentary refund for part of the admission price (usually less than two hours).

Tipping

At bars, restaurants and taxis, a 10 percent tip is typically considered fair. Unlike other countries, at many Hungarian restaurants, paying with a debit card can result in the tip going straight to the owner. To avoid this trap, visitors should tip in cash. This way, the money will most likely go to the waitstaff. Also, handing the cash directly to the waiter or waitress is a common procedure. Leaving it on the table can be considered impolite. Moreover, smoking is allowed in most restaurants.
