North America

Washington, D.C., represents some of America’s most historic moments, like Martin Luther King’s speech, Lincoln’s assassination and the home of the original Declaration of Independence. Witnessing some of these moments costs a pretty penny, but there are a select few open for free. After all, isn’t America the land of the free?

The National Mall

It would be difficult to charge an admission fee to this sprawling outdoor park bordered by the U.S. Capitol on one end and the Lincoln Memorial on the other. From the Washington Monument in the center, enjoy a view of the White House and explore the Smithsonian’s free museums that line the acres of green space.

Gravelly Point

You can’t get closer to flying planes than at Gravelly Point, a park located on the Potomac River just north of Reagan National Airport. Planes take off and land right over your head among the scenery of the District’s monuments.

National Zoo

Located in Woodley Park, the zoo is a bit tucked away from the rest of the city’s sights, but it’s just a quick Metro ride from the National Mall. Visit the reptile house, the elephant house and the famous panda lair. The path through the zoo ends with the majestic lions resting on their own personal savanna.

Georgetown Waterfront

When the sun’s out in the nation’s capital, the Georgetown Harbor along the Potomac River is one of the best places to relax. Enjoy a cup of coffee or glass of wine at one of the riverfront restaurants, or try your hand at kayaking and paddle boarding on the river.

Rock Creek Park

D.C.’s largest park extends from Georgetown in the south all the way to the Maryland border to north. Take advantage of acres and acres of biking and hiking trails, picnic areas and scenic driving routes while admiring the greenery and plant life.
