Florence, Italy, boasts a history filled with Renaissance art and stately architecture. While you can easily admire the city’s culture just by strolling the streets, delve a little deeper by paying a visit to one of these top museums.
The Uffizi Gallery The Uffizi Gallery is where you’ll find some of the world’s most famous works of art. Don’t miss The Birth of Venus, La Primavera or Bacchus. The museum is open every day except Monday, 8:15 a.m.–6:50 p.m. Every first Sunday of the month is free, and reduced ticket prices (€16.75) are available for anyone age 18–25. The structure was originally founded in 1299 and was then later used by the famed Medici family, under which it was turned into a palace. Now, visitors can explore the architecture and exhibits focusing on life at a medieval court. Tours are available every day of the week, in a multitude of languages, for only a few euros.
Bargello National Museum
The Bargello National Museum acted as a fortress, police headquarters and prison over its long history. Now, travelers can visit the museum for a taste of the best Renaissance sculpture, including works by Michelangelo and Donatello. In addition to art, the museum also houses historic artifacts such as textiles, furniture, medals and other goods. The museum is open every day, 8:15 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Tickets are only €4.
Palazzo Pitti
The Palazzo Pitti is an enormous structure inhabited by influential medieval families and home to the famed Boboli Gardens. There are several attractions within the museum, include a gallery of 16th– and 17th-century paintings, refurbished royal apartments, collections of household objects, a gallery of modern art, a costume gallery and porcelain museum, in addition to the gardens. You can easily spend an entire day walking, discovering and exploring the grounds. Tickets are only a few euros and opening hours are the same as the Uffizi Gallery.
