London, Paris and Rome are typically at the top of any new traveler’s list of cities to visit on their first voyage to Europe. The culturally and geographically diverse continent contains secret regions yet to be invaded by hordes of tourists. If you prefer a vacation full of exploratory wonders that aren’t usually found in a guidebook, consider the less-visited cities below that are still slightly off the European traveler’s radar.
Riga, Latvia
Situated on the Baltic Coast along with parts of the Nordic countries, the quaint town of Riga, Latvia, is a quick ferry ride from the big Scandinavian capitals of Stockholm and Helsinki. With a roaring (and affordable) nightlife that echoes through the tiny cobblestone streets, Riga offers the best of old and new.
Bath, England
Big city lovers who consider London a must-visit can escape the bustle of the city in the town of Bath. Only two hours from England’s capital city, the UNESCO World Heritage Site for Georgian architecture is a photographer’s dream. The ancient Roman baths for which the city is named are also obligatory activities for a relaxing daytrip from London.
Belgrade, Serbia
The formerly conflict-centric capital of Serbia is now home to a thriving arts scene and a youthful culture that loves the nightlife. To boot, Belgrade is an extremely wallet-friendly destination when it comes to lodging and dining.
Bucharest, Romania
Another cheap destination with a rich culture is Romania’s capital city of Bucharest. Bars throughout the Old Town have happy hours that give your wallet a break. Once considered the Paris of Eastern Europe, the old-world charm and complicated past set the foundation for an intriguing volume of stories.
Seville, Spain
The capital of the region of Andalusia is where Spanish culture and tradition thrive. Order a cool glass of sangria, enjoy a free tapa with your drink and then saunter off to a flamenco show for the quintessential Spanish experience.
