About 3.5 miles north of Siem Reap is Angkor Wat, the iconic temple of Cambodia, whose flag depicts the site’s quincunx of towers. It was built by King Suryavarman II in Yaśodharapura, the capital of the Khmer Empire as a dedication to Vishnu, representing Mount Meru, the sacred mountain of Hindu mythology.
Its design is firmly entrenched in the Khmer’s high classical style. The architects of the 12th century were quite adept at working with sandstone, adorning the walls with intricate bas-reliefs and devatas, a common South Asian architectural motif decorating the outer walls with religious characters. A moat and outer wall surround the complex which house the five central towers. Unlike most religious sites of Angkor, it is oriented west, most likely because this orientation is associated with Vishnu.
As a part of the Khmer Empire, the site endured sackings from regional enemies as well as refurbishments. Unlike many temples, this site was never completely abandoned, remaining in use since its construction. Sometime in the late 13th century, Angkor Wat made a gradual transition from Hinduism to Theravada Buddhism. The following centuries brought the temple worldwide fame with Western explorers like Antonio da Madalena and Henri Mouhot.
Today, Angkor Wat is Cambodia’s biggest attraction, with more than 500,000 visitors a year. The temple complex has no accommodations, but it is just a short ride away from Siem Reap. Passes are required to enter the site, which are available at the front gate for single-day, three-day and seven-day passes, costing $20, $40 and $60, respectively.
