The Premier League returns to action Aug. 13 after a summer break, and it looks set to be a vintage season.
Last season saw the unlikely triumph of minnows Leicester City, who took advantage of a weak season from the traditional top clubs to take the league title. This summer has seen incredible spending on transfers fueled by a lucrative new television deal, with hundreds of millions of pounds spent on reinforcements.
Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea have new managers in the shape of Jose Mourinho, Antonio Conte and Pep Guardiola, respectively. Fans of these huge teams will be hoping a new philosophy can galvanize the players to greater heights than last year’s disappointing campaigns.
That said, it is not only the managers that have changed. Each of the big teams has invested heavily in new players. One of the most significant signings could be the $39.5-million transfer of French midfielder N’Golo Kante from Leicester to Chelsea. Not only has the London club gotten their hands on the outstanding defensive midfielder of last season, they have significantly weakened a championship rival.
With plenty to talk about at the top of the table, it would be easy to forget about the rest of the league. However, the new TV deal has flooded the Premiership with money, which clubs are using to strengthen significantly.
Even smaller teams like Bournemouth are spending big, buying players such as $13-million midfielder Lewis Cook. With the Premier League attracting top talent from around the world, the stage is set for a blockbuster season.
