Trends / Unique Itineraries & Tours

With the Tribeca Film Festival going on this month, April might be a good time to skip the mainstream theaters and enjoy one of New York’s many independent cinemas. The city has always been good to film, but we’ve narrowed down the city’s many theaters to our six favorites.

Angelika Film Center

New Yorkers have a love/hate relationship with this theater. The selection is great with a steady stream of independent and foreign films, but your screening is going to be interrupted by the rumbling subway underneath.

Paris Theatre

This Midtown establishment opened in 1948, specializing in French cinema as well as international and classic films. Paris Theatre also hosts the occasional Hollywood premier.

Film Society of Lincoln Center

Not all independent cinemas are crusty old shacks. Lincoln Center has one of the best-looking theaters in the country with a large variety of programming, including film showcases and dinner/movie nights.

Landmark’s Sunshine Cinema Sunshine originally opened as a Yiddish vaudeville theater in 1909. It closed its doors for World War II before reopening in 1996, refurbishing the venue with stadium seating and a Dolby surround sound system.

Film Forum

This SoHo non-profit was started by two cinephiles with a projector and a bunch of folding chairs. Today, it features American and international indies, film festivals and retrospectives on three screens.

IFC Center

The IFC Center lives inside the historic Waverly Theater with five screens showing a variety of independents and classics. Be sure to arrive early to catch the short film screenings before the feature.
