Adventure

Just more than three miles east of beautiful Key Biscayne is the undersea wonder known as Neptune Memorial Reef. Built in 2007 as an artificial, artistic structure meant to resemble the Lost City of Atlantis, this location features enormous pillars and arcs, as well as great statues of lions and other creatures.

To many, the Neptune Reef is a place to say their final goodbyes. Visitors can spread the cremated ashes of their sea-loving dearly departed at the underwater memorial site, and even place a seashell or starfish gravesite placard in the ruins. This type of burial arrangement is considered a green option.

It is also a great place for those looking to scuba dive. The man-made structure creates a sort of coral reef for tropical wildlife, and those brave enough to descend into its depths can experience a variety of fish, eels and sea mammals. Those with underwater cameras can take advantage of the eerie ambiance and capture brilliant photos.

While there is no cost to enter the underwater park, visitors will need a boat to ferry them to the location. Travelers can bring their own boat, or team up with one of the dive crews that are recommended by the Neptune Memorial Reef Society.
