History

Holy Week, or Semana Santa as it is known locally, is a huge event in Antigua. Devotees from all over Central America and tourists of all creeds from around the world flock to the colonial city to take in a series of spectacular parades.

Local families spend hours constructing brightly colored alfombras, or carpets, on the cobbled streets, featuring either geometric patterns or religious icons made from colored sawdust or flower petals. The alfombras are made on the route of the many parades, during which massive floats are carried slowly around town by participants dressed in traditional costumes. Eighty people are needed to carry the largest float, which is so long it has trouble negotiating the tight corners of the town.

The nighttime processions are the most atmospheric, as incense rises in clouds from hooded penitents accompanied by marching bands as they move slowly but inexorably around town. The mood is solemn, and there is a sense of real contemplation, so be careful to remain respectful at all times.

The costumes and floats are worth a visit on their own, and the colonial architecture of Antigua really makes the mind wander back to the time of the Spanish conquest. Room reservations are incredibly hard to come by during Holy Week, so book well in advance.

Holy Week in Antigua is not to be missed, and other activities can be added to create a multifaceted trip. Antigua is located close to three volcanoes, and is also within easy reach of the Pacific Coast and the mystical beauty of Lake Atitlan.
