The historic waterfront village of Steveston, just 12 miles south of downtown Vancouver, British Columbia, is made up of 100-year-old buildings once dedicated to the shipping and canning industry. Though the architecture is intact, many buildings now house an array of restaurants and shops that make a beguiling spot to spend an afternoon. Steveston’s ambience and charm have helped it earn a fictional alter ego, Storybrooke, the set of ABC’s Once Upon a Time.
Among the top attractions in Steveston are:
- The Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site situated on the Fraser River, where you can learn about Western Canada’s fishing industry
- Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site, which dates to 1885 and preserves the village’s canneries, boat yards, residences and stores.
- Fisherman’s Wharf, where fishing boats are offloading and selling freshly caught salmon, halibut, crab and shrimp.
Visitors should also check out the numerous shops, selling items like jewelry, soap and various arts and crafts. The village is home to numerous notable restaurants, including Blue Canoe, Tapenade Bistro, Zee’s Grilled Cheese, Steveston Seafood House, D Original Sausage Haus and Steveston Village Vietnamese Restaurant. Save room for cupcakes at Bell’s Bake Shop.
