This year is the 20th anniversary of the Winter X Games, the action sports competition that started on Big Bear Mountain in 1997. The games have since moved to Buttermilk Mountain in Aspen, Colo., where ESPN expanded the event into a full-on festival of action sports from Jan. 28–31.
This year’s schedule will feature 14 disciplines that include the return of Snowmobile Freestyle and Skier X, as well as fully medaled adaptive disciplines like Mono Skier X, Snowboarder X and SnoCross. ESPN will also be hosting the Special Olympics Unified in snowboarding after its successful debut last year, pairing Special Olympics Athletes with X Games talent for a dual slalom competition.
As part of their expanded entertainment lineup, ESPN is setting up four festival villages filled with music, gaming and action sports culture. The Galleria will feature DJ’s art workshops and meet-and-greets with X Games athletes. The Gaming Shack will be the festival’s tech center and is set to host the Xbox Halo 5 Tournament. The Playground will let visitors take part in the action at ESPN Sport Zone, which will offer hockey, basketball and football, in addition to Snowskate Park. The last and most important stage will be Sound Factory, whose lineup includes deadmau5, Nas, Twenty One Pilots and more.
The X Games will also be making a new stop in Oslo for the month of February, bringing America’s most prominent extreme sports brand to one of the biggest cities in the world for winter sports. To learn more about this year’s Winter X Games, visit xgames.espn.go.com.

This year, the Northern Lights put on quite the display across Ireland, but don’t think these lights are the only thing you can see in Ireland. In fact, many spots across the country provide some of the best opportunities to stargaze thanks to low levels of light pollution. Ireland has three International Dark Sky Parks and even more spots which, although not accredited, are worth a visit for anyone wishing to see the sky in its unfiltered form.
