Africa

The northern African nation from where recent travel buzz has been emanating is also one of the most wallet-friendly destinations in the region. This ancient capital is home to delectable street food, affordable lodging and practically free entertainment.

One of the best ways to learn more about the city and its sprawling Medina (walled city) is to hire a private guide. Through a reputable company, guides can cost anywhere from 200 to 400 Moroccan dirham for a half day, which amounts to $20 to $40. Some guides may take you to shops and expect commission for any purchases, but there is no obligation to buy, unless you can´t resist the soft, comfy hand-woven rugs!

Stop for a mint tea (a Moroccan tradition in hospitality) at any Fes cafe where you won´t have to shell out more than $3 or $4.

When hunger strikes, give in to the peddling restaurant workers who try to lure you in to sample a plate of couscous, with or without meat. Lunches range from 40 to 100 dirham ($4 to $10), depending on the size and what you order. Vegetarian couscous is topped with steamed veggies and cranberries for a touch of sweetness. Be careful about accepting everything that servers bring to you as not everything is free.

The next must-do activity in Fes involves negotiating your way to some fine Moroccan goods like spices, Argan oil, leather products and colorful lamps. As nearly all listed prices are negotiable, you can look forward to paying the price that you want to pay, so long as the vendor agrees.
