If you watched the short-lived TLC reality show Wedding Island, you may have left wondering if a destination wedding is right for you. Beyond the hyped-up drama lies some truth to the task. Destination weddings do take a lot of work, but the right planner can make all the difference. Many brides want to be in control, but you can’t do everything from thousands of miles away.
Once you’ve decided on your destination, you’ll need a point person to help coordinate the effort. First, find out if your location offers an on-site coordinator. If you can’t meet in person, connect via Skype to get on the same page and develop some trust. Ask about the coordinator’s previous experience with weddings.
Take time to hear about the planner’s vendor relationships. If the coordinator has 30 weddings under her belt, she likely has a track record with florists, stylists, photographers and musicians.
Develop a clear understanding of what type of services the planner will provide. Will she arrange transportation for your guests? How about prepare gift bags for guests? Miscommunication is one of the biggest mistakes surroundings weddings. It’s compounded when the assumptions and mistakes happen across many miles..
Finally, ask about the wedding planner’s process. Some planners work with all-inclusive wedding packages that take care of decorations, food and more. If you’re prepared to let a planner make the final call, make sure you’re communicating your preferences in your initial meeting so you’re satisfied with your big day.
