The cluster of islands known as the Archipelago Sea, in the beautiful country of Finland, is situated in the Baltic Sea between the Gulf of Bothnia and the Gulf of Finland. It is considered the largest archipelago in the world based on the number of islands within it, a whopping 50,000 in total. Only several hundred of these are considered inhabitable, with a total of 60,000 permanent residents. Its remote islands are rich with life, history, ever-changing landscapes and a diversity of species.
The most popular of the cluster of islands are the Åland Islands. The best part of experiencing the nature of any region is it usually comes at little cost. Here are some activities and sights to check out on a stay in this hidden gem.
This hiking path in Åland takes about four hours and covers many of the main historic attractions of the area. The trail will bring you past the Kestelholm Castle and Bomarsund Fortress, as well as Sund’s medieval church.
This historic castle dates back to the 1300s, has been restored and is open to visitors for as little as €6.
Kayaking
The best sights of the islands are accessible by water. Explore the area by renting a kayak or canoe for the day for around €50 and take a guided tour through the inner and outer islands.
