Egypt has become a top tourist destination but that doesn’t mean you have to break the bank to pay it a visit. If you’re absolutely dying to visit the pyramids, plan your trip during the summer between July and September, which is outside of the typical tourist season.
Getting around Egypt on a budget is surprisingly easy thanks to the overnight trains that run between Cairo, Luxor and Aswan. A 12-hour trip will cost you around $15 and it doubles as transportation and a place to sleep at night, so you can kill two birds with one stone and save on accommodation. Maybe it’s not the most comfortable ride, but it’s do-able.
Stick to the street vendors for the most authentic and affordable food, which shouldn’t run anymore than $10 a meal, while some restaurants can cost between $30–100.
Let’s be honest, the pyramids are what most people go to Egypt for, so if you’re on a budget it’s best to make them your focus. Giza is just a hop, skip and a jump away by cab for $5.50 one-way from Cairo, and admission is only $10 to enter the complex. From there, you have the option of checking out the burial room for an additional $18.
Spend the rest of your time exploring by foot and visiting local street vendors in each city. You’ll want to stay primarily in Cairo, as that’s where most of the action is, and hop between cities at night to sleep.
