Helsinki is the capital city of Finland, and seen by many as the design epicenter of Europe. Tourists come to enjoy Finnish saunas, museums and a vibrant club scene. It isn’t known as the most affordable city for visitors, but there are definitely still things to do within a more limited budget.
Café culture is very strong in Finland, and so is the coffee. Start off the day with a steaming cup at Robert’s Coffee, a café located in Old Market Hall. The market is a Helsinki landmark opened in 1889, and sells everything from Lappish flatbread to reindeer meat. Finland has been making waves in the culinary world and it’s on display everywhere in Helsinki.
Make a quick stop at the Kamppi Chapel of Silence to regain your stamina (entry is free). The Design Museum might be a good place to begin your tour of the city’s art marvels, appropriately located in the Design District. Admission costs €10 (about $12.39), and it’s within strolling distance of many other galleries, showrooms and museums.
If you happen to visit during the summer season, there’s the Kaljakellunta to attend. The Kaljakellunta is an open- air beer festival where thousands of people grab an inflatable device and float down the Vantaa River while drinking a cold brew. It’s a free event, and the date is always set by its participants.
