Luxor is the ultimate travel destination for history enthusiasts. Located in Upper Egypt, the city is often characterized as the world’s greatest open-air museum, as the site of the ancient Egyptian city of Thebes. Ruins of the temple complexes at Karnak and Luxor tower over the modern city, and across the scenic River Nile are ancient monuments, temples and tombs of the West Bank Necropolis, which includes Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens.
In East Bank, visit the Mummification Museum to experience the ancient process of preserving bodies for only $1. Take a tour of the ancient Temple of Karnak and the Luxor Temple, the city’s iconic preserved landmark and largest temple complex in Egypt for a range of prices. Extensive history tours are available for around $25, but shorter guided tours and self-guided tours are available for less.
In addition to its ancient temples and tombs, Luxor is known for its culinary traditions. The city is a vegetarian’s paradise with an abundance of fresh seasonable vegetables featured in every meal. Jamboree Restaurant, located in the large souk market, is a great spot for traditional Egyptian dishes, with large servings priced around $1–2. Enjoy classic and delicious street food like kofte, kebab and mousaka for next to nothing while enjoying views of the Nile at El Kegabgy. For a splurge meal, make reservations at Salahadeen, an authentic restaurant featuring a unique, old world ambiance. The average meal here is around $10.
Luxor is a great city for biking, and there are several rental shops throughout the East Bank, and many hotels offer bikes as well. Rental prices are generally less than $2. To visit the West Bank sites, regular ferries are available for only a few cents. While the weather is sunny and hot in Luxor, it’s also a walkable city, and most of it can be seen via foot.
