Reykjavik is a city of contrasts: new and old; urban and rural; peaceful and bustling. Iceland’s capital embodies the best of what the country has to offer. Get lost on the narrow streets and be inspired.
Have breakfast at C is for Cookie, a cozy coffee house. Spend about $8 on Illy coffee and sweet bakery items. Take your coffee to go and explore the various shops. Stroll by Harpa, Iceland’s concert hall and conference center. The stunning glass structure reflects light from the nearby water.
Located in the main square in the heart of the old city, stop by Kjallarinn for a lunch of traditional Icelandic fare. Sample langoustine, smoked fish, light salad and berry desserts for about $20.
The National Museum of Iceland features permanent and temporary exhibits highlighting the heritage and history of Iceland. It is open daily in the summer and closed Mondays in the winter. Adult admission is $12. Just outside of Reykjavik, the Blue Lagoon spa is one of Iceland’s more famous attractions and worth the trip. Entrance fees start around $42.
End your night overlooking the water and dine at Tapas Barinn. With an Icelandic take on Spanish tapas dishes, you can find something for every taste. Smoked puffin with blueberry sauce is a menu highlight. Dinner will cost about $15.
