Go for brunch at The Roosevelt, a charming and local spot that’s won many awards since opening in 2011. You can go for a traditional breakfast dolled up, like the buttermilk pancakes with roasted apples, whipped ricotta and maple syrup ($8), or something a bit more creative, such as the wild boar ham with cheese grits, fried eggs, Brussels sprouts and red eye gravy.
The American Civil War Museum can be a great place to start a tour of the city’s many Civil War-related sites. The complex is actually made up of three museums, with Historic Tredegar and the White House & Museum of the Confederacy located in Richmond. Historic Tredegar is located inside the 1861 Tredegar Gun Foundry, where visitors can explore the war through the viewpoints of the three major players — the Unionists, Confederates and African Americas. The White House & Museum of the Confederacy was the residence of Confederate President Jefferson Davis, and the adjoining museum features three floors of artifacts and galleries.
If you’d like to take advantage of a walking tour, there are two favorites: the Richmond Slave Trail and the Liberty Trail.
If history’s not your thing, another draw to the area is the Lavender Fields Herb Farm. The family-owned, organic farm is a local favorite for its regular calendar of classes, tours and events, as well as the farm’s gifts, snacks and picturesque rural scenery.
Grab lunch or dinner at The Black Sheep for one of their popular battleship sandwiches. You can get half for around $12, and the options and ingenuity are endless. If you’re going all Southern, order the CSS Virginia, which comes with fried chicken livers on a toasted baguette and topped with cabbage, green onions, green apples and remoulade sauce. If you can’t stand the thought of stomaching a chicken liver, you can substitute the liver for roasted chicken.
