Central America has a lot to offer surfers and is gaining international recognition for its waves.
From Panama in the south to Guatemala in the north, there are plenty of spots to keep surfers happy on their travels around the continent. Here are five intriguing destinations.

El Paredon, Guatemala
This tiny fishing village is relatively undiscovered but is becoming a more popular spot. A newly-built hostel recently doubled the number of accommodation options, but get down there soon if you want to catch the waves before they are spoiled by crowds.

El Tunco, El Salvador
Further down the Pacific Coast from El Paredon is El Tunco, the famous Salvadorean spot which boasts four different breaks within easy reach of a charming town. The biggest waves occur during the summer months, which also happen to be the wettest times of the year.

Playa Hermosa, Nicaragua
Stay in the party town of San Juan del Sur and escape in the morning to this remote beach, which is only accessible by boat. The lack of local surfers means you are likely to have the place to yourself!

Playa Tamarindo, Costa Rica
If you are looking to party as well as surf, Playa Tamarindo offers the best combination. Yes, it’s touristy, but you can’t find too many busy clubs in the more remote beaches of the country.

Isla Bocas del Toro, Panama
The Caribbean island of Bocas del Toro offers a variety of spots, idyllic beaches and interesting nightlife. The island is developed, and offers plenty to keep non-surfers in your group busy throughout the day.
