Hotel

On a recent weekend getaway to New York City, I stayed at the Club Quarters Hotel, Wall Street. I had already stayed at the Club Quarters, Chicago several years prior, and had not been impressed, but decided to give the New York property a chance to prove itself.

The hotel is located in a convenient spot if you’re looking to stay in the Financial District, which I was. You’re within close walking distance to the subway and within reasonable walking distance to the main attractions in that area, such as the 9/11 Memorial, Battery Park and Brooklyn Bridge. I, however, love to walk when I’m in the city, so those who are less enthusiastic about being a pedestrian may want to just take a taxi or the subway. Regardless, the property is close enough to many of the attractions in the area that your taxi ride will be quite affordable.

The front desk staff was helpful and friendly, and I could see from the entrance that the hotel restaurant, The Bailey, had a lively crowd. I considered stopping in for dinner, but was told they were booked full for the evening.

My room was small, but it did have one feature about the layout I liked, and never knew I preferred until then. Instead of the television being located on a large piece of furniture to the side, or across the room, which can end up being a complete waste of space, it was mounted on the wall directly in front of the bed. No need to swivel the screen to face a certain direction, or to lie a certain way in bed to have a good vantage point. Obviously, the choice was made to save space in the room, but it was a good choice for more than that reason, nonetheless.

The bathroom, unfortunately, was outdated and reminiscent of a dorm bathroom. Out-of-fashion tile flooring and a stand-alone shower with little room for any needed toiletries and a plain, white shower curtain left a lot to be desired. The sink and vanity had been updated, but looked rather cheap, if new. I spent as little time in the space as possible.

Overall, however, I realized at the end of my stay, that was exactly what The Club Quarters, Wall Street was for — businesspeople who need a comfortable place to stay, shower and sleep for a few nights on a budget, on a trip with a packed schedule and little time to relax. The proximity of the property to many of the places I wanted to visit, combined with the satisfactory furnishings and free WiFi, made the hotel one that, while not particularly praiseworthy, made sense for its clientele and purpose.
