You’ve probably the saying, “Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints”. Ultimately, this phrase is at the heart of Leave No Trace, an environmental movement aiming to preserve the beauty of natural areas while still allowing humans to enjoy and appreciate them. This movement has seven key tenants, all of which are crucial to maintaining environmental and social integrity.
- Plan ahead and prepare to minimize motor vehicles and waste.
- Travel and camp on durable surfaces in order to protect the integrity of the ground you stand on and the animals around.
- Dispose of waste properly because litter can destroy both the beauty and health of an environment.
- Leave what you find, as removing objects/creatures from a habitat can be detrimental.
- Minimize campfire impacts in order to prevent forest fires. Never operate a fire under the influence, and do not leave campfires unattended, even for a minute.
- Respect wildlife. They were here long before you, and will be there long after you leave. It may be your vacation, but it is their home.
- Be considerate of other visitors. Nature is a shared space. Unlike suburbs and urban areas, the wilderness is an area we all share together, and we must treat it that way.
Next time you are enjoying some fun in a state or national park, remember these simple ethics. Find Your Park is a great resource for helping you discover nature close by, so find your park, take nothing but pictures and leave nothing but footprints.
