3 Best Hikes for Fall Foliage in the Adirondacks

Destinations / North America

Anyone who’s hiked in the Adirondacks before knows it to be true — some hikes just don’t give you the views. You get to the summit and you’re completely treed-in, no views to speak of. Sometimes, you get to the summit of your mountain hike and discover there is a view … but it’s pretty slight.

You don’t want these conditions when you’re going leaf peeping, so for the best vistas and views this fall foliage season, try one of these hikes.

1. Indian Head and Rainbow Falls

If you’re fine with a bit of a trek — this hike clocks in at around 11 miles — you could definitely do worse than Indian Head. This trail is extremely popular and produces one of the most Instagrammed views in the region.

2. Roaring Brook Falls

For something much more accessible, try Roaring Brook Falls, a 1.6-mile hike with just less than 500 feet of elevation gain. Enjoy the waterfall from the bottom before hiking up to the top, from which you’ll enjoy colorful views of the mountains beyond.

3. Castle Rock

Slightly longer but still relatively easy if you’re in shape, the Castle Rock trail is about 3 miles long. From the small summit, you’ll be able to see expansive views of forests and lakes, with mountains in the background, all awash in color.
