There are so many reasons to visit Lisbon — the culture, the cuisine, the history and, of course, the arts. If you’re planning an arts-focused trip to the city, here are three can’t-miss spots to add to your itinerary.
1. The Neighborhood of Chiado
The neighborhood of Chiado is known for its long-standing population of artists and writers. As you stroll through the area, you’ll see their historic touch and influence on the city via statutes and monuments, but don’t just come here for a stroll. You can also plan to visit the oldest bookstore in the world, Bertrand Bookstore, as well as Convento do Carmo, one of the largest churches in the city dating to the 1300s. The church is now a museum.
Another museum set within a convent, National Tile Museum’s 16th-century setting is beautiful on its own, but so are all of the artifacts it contains. The museum showcases the history of tile work, from the 1400s to present day.
The Calouste Gulbenkian Museum features more than five millennia of Egyptian, European, Greek, Roman, Islamic and Asian art. Once a private collection, the artwork is now a can’t-miss spot during your trip to Lisbon.
