Morton Theatre

In Athens, Georgia, Morton Theatre is considered one of the oldest vaudeville theaters still in existence. Built in 1910, the theater hosted performing greats like Louis Armstrong in its heyday, before being transformed into a movie house in the 1930s and then being closed in the 1950s. In the 1980s and 1990s, the theater was slowly restored and is now open for events and tours.

The Gem Theatre

In Kannapolis, North Carolina, The Gem Theatre is also historically significant, as one of the oldest single-screen movie theaters still in operation. Originally opened in 1936, the Art Deco building underwent several evolutions over the decades. Today, though, you can still get a movie ticket for just a few dollars and even still sit in its iconic balcony seating.

The Lyric Theatre

In Oxford, Mississippi, Lyric Theatre has literary appeal. The building, built in the late 1800s, was originally William Faulkner’s family stable, but, in the 1920s, the space was converted into a theater. The property was closed, then converted to offices, then back into a theater, finally, in 2008.
