Beyond the iconic Victoria Falls and popular wildlife game reserves, Zambia is home to some other pretty special destinations with fewer crowds but just as much allure. The country’s 10 provinces and more than 70 towns promise a wide range of experiences extending beyond its national parks (although these are definitely worth a visit, too). Here’s four other places in Zambia to add to your travels:
Mansa, Luapulu Province
The capital of this province, Mansa hosts the annual Luapula Cultural Festival, next held in July 2025. At this exciting festival, expect traditional music, dance and storytelling, offering deep insights into local celebrations and culture. Just outside Mansa is Lake Bangweulu, a haven for nature enthusiasts. Renowned for bird-watching opportunities, this lake is also popular for fishing, with tilapia, catfish and bream found here. And be sure to take a relaxing boat trip along the lake to take in the landscape.

Lake Tanganyika
Situated along the borders of Zambia, Tanzania, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo, this lake is the world’s second-deepest and offers a vast array of activities for travelers. The lake’s warm, clear waters make for a great day of snorkeling and scuba diving, especially in the Mpulungu area, where tropical fish and vibrant ecosystems lay just beneath the surface. Fishing here means having the chance to catch notable species like goliath tigerfish and Nile perch, and a beach serves as the perfect spot for swimming and sunbathing.
Kasama, Northern Province
This town is not only the capital of the country’s Northern Province, but also a gateway to the region’s historical and natural attractions. Enjoy local cuisine like nshima (a maize-based staple), chikanda (a groundnut cake) and samp (hominy corn) within the town’s markets, and shop for traditional crafts. Just a short drive from town lies the Mwela Rock Art Paintings, a UNESCO World Heritage site with more 100 prehistoric rock paintings offering a glimpse into ancient communities. And, a little beyond the town, find Chishimba Waterfalls.

Mongu, Barotse Province
Delve into the heritage of the Lozi people in Mongu. This ethnic group is indigenous to Zambia and best known for their rich traditions and complex social structures. Start your cultural journey at Nayuma Museum, home to displays of traditional artifacts, clothing and narratives. Continue to Mumwa Craft Association, which sheds light on Mongu’s historical and cultural evolution. Here, you can see traditional crafts being made and purchase unique, handmade items directly from local artisans.

A new study from Cruisebound shows more millennials are cruising, as the average age of cruisers trends downward. The study discovered the largest portion of cruisers are ages 25 to 44, making up 45 percent of all cruise bookers. Seniors, aged 55 and up, currently only account for 26 percent of cruise bookers. The platform theorizes this trend in younger cruisers is brought about by cruise lines’ increasing offering of family-friendly experiences and shorter cruises that can be enjoyed over a long weekend.
