Are you planning to visit Kyushu, the southernmost island of Japan, in 2022? Here are a few things to add to your itinerary.
Head to the Beach
You have multiple options for a beautiful beach day on Kyushu. Try the Nichinan Coast for palm tree-dotted shores and beaches that offer dining, watersports and surfing. You can also try snorkeling or diving at Amami Oshima to experience the meteorite crater-set beaches.
Chow Down on the Fried Chicken
Nakatsu is considered the “mecca of Japanese fried chicken” and, as such, it’s home to more fried chicken shops than convenience stores or schools. If you’re feeling hungry, make tracks for this mid-sized city to see what all the hype is about.
Taste-Test the Local Sake
If you’re more on the thirsty side, Kyushu has you covered there as well, with its six sake breweries. The breweries offer tours, but you can also just buy a bottle for tasting, too.
Experience the Mecha Culture
Mecha is essentially robot anime or manga and one of Kyushu’s newest attractions allows the culture to flourish. Gundam Park Fukuoka, an indoor amusement park that’s entirely mecha-themed, recently opened. The park includes the largest Gundam statue in the world, as well as arcades and exhibitions.
