From mindful outdoor activities to thrilling adventures, Central Oregon’s secret season is officially underway. So, what exactly can you do in this beautiful destination this fall?
Take to Healing Waters
Head to newly reopened Kah-Nee-Ta Hot Springs Resort to relax in its outdoor pools, lazy river and natural hot springs along the Warm Springs River. A visit here also promises high desert vistas, unique accommodations like a lodge and teepee, and architecture created in harmony with nature.
Look to the Skies
Central Oregon’s high elevation means prominently clear skies and minimal light pollution, great for stargazing. Go on a Moonlight or Starlight Canoe Tour with Wanderlust Tours to see the skies while also learning about the constellations from expert guides. Can’t get enough of the stars? At Tetherow Resort, enjoy a night sky series, while a stay at Sunriver Resort means easy access to Sunriver Nature Center and Observatory. And don’t forget High Desert Museum’s Forest at Night exhibit, which delves into the abundance of nocturnal species in the region and the importance of dark sky preservation to their survival.
Go on Scenic Hikes
Already spectacular views are even more beautiful come autumn. At Smith Rock State Park, whether you’re a novice or experienced hiker, you’ll witness dramatic cliffs. Further west is Three Sisters Wilderness, which features 40 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail, four volcanic peaks and two national forests. Local pumpkin patches can also be found throughout the area, including Smith Rock Ranch and DD Ranch.
Have Thrills on Two Wheels
If you love mountain biking, Central Oregon is just the place for you. With more than 600 miles of maintained trails, you’ll find the right path for you. Phil’s Trail, for instance, sits minutes from downtown Bend, while the Maston Trail System near Sisters is a must-ride. For a more downhill-only adventure, consider Mt. Bachelor’s Bike Park, which is open through early fall and includes a new, 4.5 trail. Endless bike pathways await at Sunriver Resort, while Black Butte Ranch boasts many bike trails.
Seek Wellness in Nature
Are you a yoga fan? Take part in outdoor yoga classes at Mt. Bachelor’s Pine Marten Lodge or participate in a private session in Tumalo State Park with Roaming Yoga. At Juniper Preserve, you can take your wellness journey further with a visit to its on-site spa and wellness programs. And if you need to satiate your golf fix, Central Oregon Golf Trail includes nearly 30 courses.
