There’s something special about Bristol in summer, and this year is no exception. From the return of the city’s famous festivals to the introduction of new events, here are five reasons to visit this beautiful city this summer:
Brunel’s SS Great Britain Walking Tour
Running July 8 and 12 (with more dates announced in the coming weeks), visitors can join Bristol’s legendary engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel on a walking tour of the Harbourside. During the tour, visitors hear stories behind some of his greatest works and how his engineering changed the world.
This free event, through Sept. 3, comprises part of Bristol 650, in which the city celebrates 650 years since becoming an independent city and county. Unicornfest sees 60 supersized unicorn sculptures painted by local artists. The pieces can be found on display at famous landmarks such as Clifton Suspension Bridge and Weston-super-Mare’s The Grand Pier.
GOOD Stories in Food recently launched two new food tours: Bristol Hotspots and Hidden Treasures, and Wine and Cheese Tasting in the Cheddar Valley. Travelers join local food expert Florence to discover the stories behind Bristol and Somerset’s food and drink scene. Florence focuses on independents creating the tastiest flavors in an ethical and sustainable way, and highlights restaurants, retailers, producers and everything in between.
The Bristol International Balloon Fiesta is a free event (Aug. 10–13) and the largest of its kind in Europe. More than 100 hot-air balloons take to the skies for early morning and teatime every day. Additionally, Night Glow shows and fireworks light up the sky come night time. Other fun features of the fiesta include fairground rides, entertainment, live music and beautiful aerial displays, all set on the grounds of Ashton Court Estate.
Attracting more than 250,000 visitors, this free festival, running July 14–16, includes a lengthy program of music, dance, circus acts, maritime displays and more. Visit five performances around the harbors to enjoy beats, boats and backflips.
