Destinations / North America

With hit shows like Schitt’s Creek (which saw a rundown motel transformed into something quaint and charming) and trends of younger generations reinventing of vintage items into something unique, motels across the country join the movement, including those in California. In San Luis Obispo County, several motels with long histories see a new lease on life thanks to renovations and upgrades, and invite guests to become part of history.

Pacific Motel, Cayucos

Beginning as one of Cayuco’s first motels, these 1920s bungalows reopened last September under a new name. Pacific Motel came to life by local landscapers Ryan and Marisa Fortini, in which cozy, beach-inspired rooms and a welcoming public space draw guests far and wide. The cherry on top? The motel sits steps from the beach.

The Sea Air Inn & Suites, Morro Bay

Located one block from the waterfront, The Sea Air Inn & Suites recently reopened after extensive remodeling. Now, guests can enjoy a stay in a clean and updated inn before heading to the beach or, equally close, an array of shopping and dining outlets near downtown Morro Bay.

Farmhouse, Paso Robles

The latest project of Nomada Hotel Group, this revamped property opened last May and embraces a Mid-Century vibe spanning 26 separate cottages. In addition to thoughtfully designed amenities, guests can also book a small-town retreat featuring board- and batten-designed bungalows with red metal roofs and tiled front patios. Soak in SLO CAL weather with firepits, fountains and hammocks, all surrounded by lemon trees and colorful gardens. Keep an eye out as well for Nomada Hotel Group’s soon-to-open River Lodge, also in Paso Robles.

San Luis Creek Lodge, San Luis Obispo

Reborn in late 2020, this property is the brain child of PRG Hospitality Group and designer Nina Freudenberger of Haus Interior. Blending that classic Californian aesthetic with contemporary farmhouse flair, guests also spot Central Coast bohemian details incorporated through the space. Part of the Travel Sustainable program, the lodge ensures a guest’s stay is more sustainable and just as enjoyable.

Cambria Beach Lodge, Cambria

This lodge reopened in 2016 after a complete redesign, emerging as the first lifestyle boutique motel in Cambria. The lodge combines a Moonstone Beach front location with a mountain range as its backdrop, showcasing the spectrum of sites and activities guests can enjoy during their stay, from surfing to hiking, wine tasting to simply relaxing with 360-degree views.
