You’ve heard of 3D movies and may have even been to some — donning funny-looking paper glasses that make objects jump out at you, heightening your movie-going experience. Then, 4D movies incorporated physical motion such as vibrating seats. But, if you really enjoy the idea of “being there” when watching a movie, you may want to check out 5D cinema. According to a popular 5D website featuring movies in Russia, Israel, Greece and Thailand, “You become totally involved in what is happening on the screen and feel movements, rays of sun, wind blowing and humid air of the ocean breeze.”
Some of the movie titles include Pharaoh’s Mine, Killer Race and Dragon Island. Although there are no 5D theaters yet in the United States, there are several 4D theaters, including the Oxnard Plaza Stadium in Oxnard, Calif. (“The Planet’s Most Immersive Movie Experience”); The Michigan Science Center in Detroit, Mich. (“The Largest 4D motion EFX Theater in the World”); and the Mauna Lani Resort Shopping Center in Big Island, Hawai’i (“Hawaii’s First 4D Theater”).
If you live in the States, you’ll have to have your penchant for moveable, shakable movies quenched with the 4D variety for now, but you can always plan a trip oversees if you want to see a movie where smoke, fire, and bubbles surround you as part of the 5D experience. Don’t forget the popcorn, and hold on tight!
