Letchworth Village in Rockland County once served as a residential institution for the physically and mentally disabled of all ages. The village opened in 1911 and spanned more than 130 buildings, but reports of poor treatment and improper care eventually led to its closure in 1996. Located in East Bethany, Rolling Hills Asylum was once a poor house, or asylum for orphans, widowed women and their children, and the disabled.
