Yes, most people travel to Siem Reap to see the sun rise over the towers of Angkor Wat, but there is so much more to do and see in the resort town in northwestern Cambodia. As the second-largest city of Cambodia, Siem Reap offers visitors other awe-inspiring temple viewings and other experiences.
Banteay Srei
This 10th-century Hindu temple feels small compared to other Angkorian temples, but its exquisite sandstone carvings are quite the marvel. Popular with tourists, it is known as the “jewel of Khmer art” and is dedicated to Shiva and Parvati, believed by many to have been built by women.
Phare, The Cambodian Circus
Similar to Cirque du Soleil, the night circus is a mixture of theater, music, dance and acrobatics. As the top-rated modern cultural performance in Siem Reap, Phare presents a plethora of talented young artists who share an energetic and electric performance.
Phnom Kulen National Park
Along with being a beautiful national park, it is also a sacred site with temples and a magnet for kru khmer, or natural medicine doctors, due to its holy waters. Popular attractions along with the waterfalls include Thousand Lingas at Kbal Spean and Preah Ang Thom pagoda with its giant reclining Buddha.
Cambodian Landmine Museum
Inside Angkor National Park 15 miles north of Siem Reap, this museum tells the story of soldier Aki Ra who returned to the villages to defuse landmines he had planted. Along with an educational history, guests proceeds will be used to improve the living conditions of the children in the Relief Center.
Old Market
The bustling market is the place to go in the center of Siem Reap for souvenirs and authentic local snacks. From silk scarves to handicrafts, fresh produce to Bai Bach Chrouk (a popular Cambodian breakfast), visitors will revel in the bustle of local life at the market.
Pub Street
The main street with lots of bars, markets, street food and restaurants, Pub Street is the center of the action at night in Siem Reap. The busy and illuminated street remains open late, till dawn, where you can find a cheap pint and lots of music and action.
