Dakshineswar Temple first opened in 1855 and sits on the eastern side of the Hooghly River. A Hindu temple, it’s one of the oldest kai temples in India. The biggest festival in the city, Durga Puja is an annual celebration of the worship of the Hindu mother goddess Durga. Held since the early 17th century, this event is part of the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, spanning five days every October.
