Independence Square, also called Plaza Grande, is the main central public square in Quito. It features a monument to the independence heroes of 1809, the year remembered as the first call for independence of the Royal Audience of Quito from the Spanish monarchy. Dating back to the mid-16th century, Quito Metropolitan Cathedral is a Catholic cathedral located in Independence Square.
