The Philadelphia region is home to a ton of celebrated craft breweries, like Yuengling, producing a staple lager for generations of Pennsylvanians, and Yards Brewing Company, brewing their classic pale ale and delicious seasonal beers for more than two decades. Over the past few years, the City of Brotherly Love has welcomed a variety of new, unique breweries popping up on Philadelphia taps and becoming popular with locals. Any of the five fresh-faced breweries below are worth a pint on your next visit.
2nd Story Brewing Company
Located in the heart of downtown Philadelphia, 2nd Street Brewing Company is a newcomer to the neighborhood, offering a variety of handcrafted house beers and rotating taps as well as a full bar and collaborations with other brewers and businesses. In addition to pale ales, IPAs, lagers, blondes, stouts and dunkels, the brewpub serves up delicious dishes for lunch, dinner and brunch made with seasonal, local ingredients and offers live music occasionally.
Tired Hands Brewing Company
Located in Ardmore, a cute town just outside the city, Tired Hands Brewing Company has been creating delicious beers inspired by the farmhouse brewers of France and Belgium for only three short years but is a local phenomenon. The immensely popular brewery just opened its much-anticipated new brewpub, Fermentaria, blocks away from the original brewery in an 85-year-old building that once housed a trolley repair shop. Offering nearly twice the seating and a full restaurant menu designed for perfect pairings, the brewery café offers all the favorite Tired Hands brews as well as many more, as the new facility is able to reach 4,000 barrels in its first year compared to the original facility’s 1,000 barrels.
Saint Benjamin Brewing Company
Operating in the developing Philadelphia neighborhood of Kensington, Saint Benjamin Brewing Company is a three-barrel nano-brewery brewing small batches of unique beer in a 19th-century building that functioned as a sewing machine factory, storage warehouse and motor cargo company over the years. Opened last year, the brewery creates year-round favorites like Liaison Saison, a dry saison with a slight lavender finish, and seasonal brews like Wit or Witout, a classic wheat beer for those hot Philly summer months. Saint Benjamin recently started hosting tours on the weekends, providing samples of beer, chances to fill growlers, keg sales and food provided by food trucks.
Forest & Main
Located in the nearby city suburb of Ambler, Forest & Main is a fairly new brewpub operating from an old house just off the borough’s downtown. The small-scale brewery produces fresh and mostly low-alcohol brews, with favorites like Kinch, a popular IPA with low bitterness and a pronounced citrus hop aroma and flavor, and Belgian-style brews fermented with foraged Ambler yeast. Paired with their delicious beers is an excellent food menu with dishes featuring seasonal, local ingredients.
Do Good Brewing Company
Paying homage to Benjamin Franklin’s pen name, Silence DoGood, Do Good Brewing Company in Philadelphia’s Port Richmond neighborhood is committed to adhering to a philanthropic approach to brewing, with each beer it produces attached to a specific charitable cause. Opened in 2013, the giving brewery donates a percentage of proceeds from the sale of their delicious brews to charities around the area. Right now, Do Good only commercially produces one beer, the United Ale, directly connected to child poverty with a portion of the sales going toward providing food and clothing to children in need, education programs and disaster relief.
