Snowdonia National Park is one of the main attractions in Wales for its rugged terrain and varied activities.
The marquee attraction is the peak of Snowdon, which at 1,085 meters is the third-highest peak in the British Isles. For most people that visit the region, climbing Snowdon is the aim.
The best time to visit is May–September, when the weather conditions are generally favorable. Outside these times there may be snow or sudden storms that make an ascent dangerous.
Experienced hikers might not think much of a 1,085 meter peak, but conditions can be treacherous. It is important to go properly equipped with sturdy shoes, a jacket and sufficient water.
Aside from Snowdon itself, there are lots of other hikes through beautiful landscapes. The mountains of Y Carneddau, Y Glyderau, Y Rhinogau and Cader Idris are all popular, challenging choices.
If you are on a longer trip, you could follow the North Wales Path, which runs along the coast between Prestatyn and Bangor, or cycle fans can hit the traffic-free route from Barmouth to Penmaenpool.
The mountain ranges of Snowdonia reach right down to the coastline, with its beautiful estuaries and bays. Highlights include Cardigan Bay and the Menai Strait, which are perfect for resting your weary hiking feet!
Hiking is a popular activity in the national park, but you can also go fishing, horse riding and climbing, among other activities. Catch the last of summer this September or plan a trip for next year.
