Planning for business trips can be a project in itself. Between planning for meetings, presentations, packing your luggage — following airline guidelines — it is easy it become overwhelmed. No matter how little or how frequently you travel, it’s best to always travel prepared. Inconveniences like lost luggage, no WiFi, canceled flights, poor flights and traffic, among other reasons, make a majority of the stressors business travelers endure.
Follow our tips on how to maximize your business travel so it can still be successful, fun and productive.
Sign up for every frequent-flyer and hotel loyalty program. These points are the perks of life while on the road, making the travel all the more worthwhile. Most airlines offer travelers beyond frequent-flyer miles and sometimes add additional incentives for loyalty. Cardholders of the American Express Business Platinum Card, for example, have access to the Centurion Lounges at airports, which offer lounge access, WiFi, complimentary snacks and drinks and private restrooms.
Use technology to your advantage. Instead of waiting in line at the concierge, save time by using apps like Yelp and OpenTable. Check out mobile map apps and you won’t get lost during the commute from hotel to meeting again. Forgo the car rentals, easily hail a ride with ride-sharing apps like Uber, Lyft or Gett. Apps are designed to make life easier, allowing business travelers to maximize their trip.
Keep your laptop or tablet handy. You never know when you’ll have a few minutes to spare and having a device on hand can be a great way to maximize your break. Catch up on emails, do some research or prepare for your next presentation.
Add leisure time to your next business trip. Carve out some time for yourself and visit an iconic landmark, go on a hike or a bit of sightseeing at a local museum. Work-life balance is crucial to reducing stress, so after pitching a successful presentation or closing a business deal, take a few hours to relax.
Sign up for pre-check programs. TSA PreCheck may come in handy for a frequent traveler, as it is the best way to beat security lines. If you’re pre-screened, you can avoid hours of waiting around. Global Entry is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection program giving you a fast pass through U.S. Customs Immigration. The program allows pre-approved travelers to bypass traditional security checks, a program best advised for frequent international travelers.
Fail to plan, plan to fail.
