TSA-Approved Snacks

Food & Drink

Taking your own food aboard planes is an excellent way to save money and skip the calorie-laden airport offerings. But with TSA rules and regulations changing almost weekly, what’s safe to pack and snack on? Try our ideas:

Bring on the sandwiches

Wrapped foods get a pass in the TSA line. Bring your favorite sandwich along to eat while boarding. Avoid ‘wiches with anything that needs refrigeration (skip the spoiled mayo), a lot of condiments (hello, soggy bread) or anything that has the potential to spend more time in your teeth than your tummy (we’re looking at you, everything bagel). We vote for the classic PB&J with some sliced banana for an extra vitamin boost.

Make your own trail mix

And get funky with it. Throw in nuts of your choice, chocolate chips, dried fruit, granola — the sky is (literally) the limit. Pack enough to nosh on several times throughout your flight. Your own stash will beat the generic-brand peanuts you’re sure to get onboard.

Don’t skip the fruit and veggies

Unpeeled natural fruit, like an orange, is good to go. Load up on your favorite fruits and veggies for a hassle-free snack. Peel, slice and carry in a Tupperware for convenience. Pair fruit with easy-to-carry items, like yogurt or pretzels for a more filling food meal.

Are You Ready for the Final Switch to Real ID?

Yesterday, TSA began enforcing new identification guidelines, a change that’s been a long-time coming. Now, travelers must show a REAL ID-compliant, state-issued ID in order to fly on domestic flights, in lieu of a non-compliant driver’s license (some other forms of identification, such as passports, will still be acceptable).
