Reveillon dinners take place in New Orleans during the holiday season. From the French word meaning “awakening,” Reveillon (that’s REV-ee-on) meals were originally served after midnight on Christmas Eve in the 19th century, following a day of fasting. The tradition faded in the 1940s and was revived in the 1990s with participation from local restaurants.
Today, dozens of famous New Orleans restaurants offer special Reveillon multicourse, fixed-price dinner menus, highlighting the Creole traditions of the past. The tradition is best experienced with a big group of loved ones, gathered around a table in a classic French Quarter restaurant, preferably after midnight. Different restaurants participate each year. Here are some restaurants frequently serving Reveillon meals:
- Antoine’s Restaurant
- The Bombay Club
- Commander’s Palace
- Galatoire’s Restaurant
- The Gumbo Shop
- Muriel’s Jackson Square
- The Pelican Club
- Tujague’s Restaurant
Many participating restaurants offer Reveillon menus throughout the entire month of December. Be sure to check the website or call the restaurant to confirm dates and times.
There are plenty of other attractions and events taking place throughout the city during the holiday season. Visit the website for a full schedule and to start planning your trip.
