South America has one of the largest Christian populations in the world and, as such, you can probably imagine Christmas is kind of a big deal down there. That’s why it’s one of the top destinations for travel during the holiday season. Check out these incredible experiences where locals love celebrating Old Saint Nick.
Brazil’s largest and loudest city doesn’t tone it down for the holiday season. Christmas markets, streets filled with lights and plenty of revelers make it a wonderful place to celebrate the holidays. Stick around after the big day and you’ll get to experience the world’s largest New Year’s Eve celebration, Rio’s Reveillon.
For Christmas, Peru’s capital city puts on a fireworks show to rival anything you’ve seen on the Fourth of July. Just before the sky lights up, all of churches in the city hold a giant mass, called Misa de Gallo, at exactly 10 p.m. It’s the perfect way to celebrate the birth of Jesus, or just experience a wonderful display of culture.
This cosmopolitan city in Argentina knows how to throw a party, and the weather here is just right for anyone looking to get away from the cold and snow that typically accompanies Christmas up north. Spend your holiday relaxing on the beach and enjoying the shows put on by the local restaurants before nabbing a great spot to view the annual Christmas fireworks show at midnight.
The Andes aren’t quite as snow-capped during Christmastime in Santiago as they are earlier in the year, but they still offer some incredible views. These, along with the brilliant display of lights and trees, make the city a true treat during the holiday season. It’s also a short drive to numerous, quaint mountain towns that really carry the Christmas feel.
