You can cover a lot of ground in Portugal in a short amount of time, and the changing scenery makes for great road trips. Here are some of the best routes.
In the north of the country, the Douro Valley is a must-see. You can drive from Porto to Pinhao for a great daytrip to try some wine, or head further up the valley to explore the area and its vineyards more.
Tras-os-Montes region is the most isolated in Portugal, home to amazing rocky mountains and friendly locals. Take a few days to drive around after diverting off the main routes around the Douro Valley.
Serra da Estrela is another great area to explore in a car, with a popular two–three-day drive taking in the road from Seia to Guarda with stops at castles, viewpoints and museums in between.
For beach lovers, Portugal is home to some truly stunning coastlines. You can follow the Atlantic coast from Aveiro to Nazare and Lagos to see some of the most famous surf beaches in the country. Bring your board and towel if you are up for some big wave surfing, and check the conditions to see where beginners can get involved, too.
