Australia’s Asian gateway underwent a renaissance of sorts at least twice since its original inception. Darwin has been almost entirely rebuilt after air raids and a devastating cyclone, and what has risen from the ashes is a vibrant multicultural destination with a thriving economy.
Darwin offers a small LGBTQ+ scene, and isn’t exactly the most luxurious location, but what it lacks in amenities it more than makes up for with a friendly atmosphere and fantastic cultural experiences.
During the dry season, between April and September, travelers flock to the Northern Territory to take in the wonders of Kakadu National Park, Litchfield National Park and Katherine Gorge. The outdoor wonderlands offer spectacular opportunities to experience Australia’s unique formations and wildlife, with kangaroos, wallabies and more calling the regions home.
Inside the city limits, there’s plenty to keep you busy. The Darwin Symphony Orchestra is a cultural highpoint, while the Darwin Waterfront offers incredible views and many excellent shopping and dining options. Museum lovers will appreciate the wealth of historic and modern centers in the city, including the Indo-Pacific Marine & Australian Pearling Exhibition and the Northern Territory Museum and Art Gallery. Be sure to check out the Darwin Military Museum, which highlights the World War II air raids that decimated the city and the aftermath.
When it comes to LGBTQ+-friendly eating, look no further than popular The Cavenagh. The restaurant is nestled inside a hotel of the same name and offers delicious international cuisines. At night, make your way to Throb, the oldest and most popular gay nightclub in the city.
