Destinations / Africa

Durban might not be the largest city in South Africa, but it rivals Cape Town in terms of historical significance and global appeal.

Start your day with a quick bite at Arts Café. They serve incredible coffee and all of your favorite breakfast staples for less than $10. From there, make your way to the Golden Mile, a strip of beaches world-renowned for their beauty. You’ll want to knock this out early before it gets too hot to enjoy.

Next, make your way to Victorian Street Market in the Central Business District. The market is home to dozens of Indian and African shopkeepers selling handcrafted goods and authentic food. Set aside $20 for your visit. Head to parc. for a delightful new restaurant that features plays on traditional foods. A meal here will cost $20.

Begin the afternoon with a stop at Phansi Museum. It’s the best place in town to experience African culture and arts. Entrance is only $3.50. Once you’re done, seek out uShaka Marine World. This expansive marine park is built around five shipwrecks and is the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. Entrance is only $14, and well worth the price of admission.

In the evening head back toward Umhlanga Beach. This is located in one of Durban’s ritzier areas and boasts a beautiful promenade and stunning scenery.

Finally, end with dinner at The Little India Restaurant for delicious curry at only $20.
