When looking to say “I do,” destination weddings are an enchanting option … until you consider the extensive planning that goes into a wedding away from home. While the planning and timing should not discourage you, it is important to measure the pros and cons of a destination wedding before booking your locale.
Destination weddings are unlike any other celebration — they usually take place in a scenic location or some place with special significance to the couple. There is no doubt the wedding will be memorable and you might even introduce guests to their next favorite vacation spot. Some wedding planners offer all-inclusive destination wedding packages that make it easier, and sometimes less expensive, than a local celebration.
When exploring a new place, it is important to consider ease of access — for yourself as you plan — as well as for your guests. Travel and transportation time must be factored in. Some guests may not be able to afford the travel costs or take the time off work for the big day; check with honored guests beforehand to ensure the most important people can attend. This can naturally limit the size of your event, which can end up saving you money.
A less glamorous, although equally important, issue to consider is the legal aspect of getting married in another country. The easiest way to avoid this wrinkle is to have a small, legal ceremony, as well as a destination wedding.
