You’ve seen destination tours focused on beer, music, murals and more — but mayonnaise? A new Greenville, South Carolina, self-guided trail celebrates all things Duke’s Mayonnaise. A staple condiment in the South, Duke’s Mayonnaise is made in Greenville, where it got its start the early 20th century.
Named for the condiment’s creator, the new Eugenia Duke’s Unofficial Mayo Guide to Greenville takes travelers on a culinary journey for 20 tastes of the town that all include, of course, mayonnaise. The self-guided trail also features four historical stops.
The online guide to the trail lays out all the stops on a map, categorized as snack, entrée or historic stops. At each restaurant, the trail recommends what to order to taste the best of the best of Greenville’s mayo-infused culinary scene. Sandwiches reign supreme on the trail, but so do southern classics such as pimento cheese.
Historical stops include Wyche Pavilion, where Eugenia Duke first began bottling Duke’s Mayonnaise in 1925; Eugenia Duke Bridge; the Camp Sevier historical marker, designating the camp where Eugenia Duke first began selling sandwiches using her mayonnaise; and the site of Ottaray Tea Room, where sandwiches featuring Duke’s Mayonnaise were sold as early as 1920.
