Adare Manor is a beautiful 5-star resort housed in a traditional Irish castle. I arrived on a dreary day, but the weather did not detract from the striking grounds.
Check-in was swift. Not so swift was finding my room. The property truly feels like a castle, with winding hallways and tucked-away staircases. Though I thought I understood the front desk person’s directions, I still got a bit lost making my way to my room on the ground floor. I also had some trouble with my key — Adare still uses keys, rather than swipe cards. I suppose I am not cut out for castle life!
All of the rooms at Adare are uniquely styled. My room was classically decorated in rich maroon fabrics. There were two queen-sized beds, each with a bench at the foot. The bathroom featured a towel warmer, a fixture I really enjoyed.
The resort hosts a golf course, spa and numerous on-site activities like falconry, wine or whiskey tasting and hot-air balloon flights. Adare offers multiple on-site dining options, including 24-hour room service. Breakfast is one of my favorite parts of a hotel stay, but since I had to leave for an early flight I did not have time to take advantage of breakfast in the inviting dining room.
While I tend to prefer newer properties located in the heart of a city, I thoroughly enjoyed my first castle experience and would recommend Adare Manor to anyone visiting southern Ireland.
