Eastern Montana is an adventurer’s dream. Miles of trails, mountains and grasslands as far as the eye can see and crystal-clear springs make for the perfect trip for anyone looking for a nature-focused and active vacation. Consider these parks situated in Eastern Montana for a memorable trip:

Perhaps one of the most famous national parks in the entire country, visiting this park often means dealing with crowds. For a more peaceful visit, enter the park from the east side via the St. Mary entrance, which sees less visitors compared to the west entrance, allowing for more stops along the iconic Going-to-the-Sun-Road to take in the views. The less-crowded entrance also means a quieter and more authentic experience. After reaching Logan Pass, head back toward the east entrance and pull in to view Wild Goose Island. Some of these pull-offs even have trails for immersive walks amidst the trees and neighboring glacial lakes.

First Peoples Jumping Buffalo State Park
Located in Cascade County, this state park boasts North America’s largest buffalo jump. One of just three protected buffalo jumps in the state, this area served as a place where Native Americans would capture and kill buffalo in bulk. A great one-mile-long cliff spans the region, with a drop of about 40 feet. As early as 500 A.D., Native Americans lured buffalo in groups to the edge of the cliff before they fell, later using the animals for meat and other resources. The park features a visitor center and several trails to take in the cliff. One trail brings visitors up the back way of the cliff to replicate the path of the buffalo. A lengthy trail, the top promises stunning views and, if lucky, glimpses of prairie dogs.

This state park lies just outside of Great Falls, and includes one of the largest freshwater springs in North America. The area, first recorded by the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1805, not only features beautiful springs but also offers opportunities for biking, hiking, picnicking, fishing, boating and more. Hikers can enjoy the more than 30 miles of paved and dirt trails of varying difficulties.
